Adapting the general approach to create devices that appel business professionals, we are greeted with the latest iteration of the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4, as this time it is powered by the Alder Lake series of CPUs from Intel.
Design
The appearance is borrowed from other popular ThinkPad devices, which gives the laptop an overall slim and sleek profile, where the whole chassis is constructed from anodized aluminum which provides rigidity to the structure.
12th Generation CPU
The processor opted for this model is the Intel Core i5 1235u 12th Generation Alder Lake Processor. As it belongs to the u series of processors it precedences on maximizing efficiency while maintaining stable performance figures. That is why the provided package consists of 2 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores, along with 12 threads. They are clocked at 1.30 GHz initially, and under heavy draws or high-density computing operations, it can boost itself to a maximum of 4.40 GHz which enables for complete utilization of the given package.
On the other side of the spectrum, the efficiency cores are assigned intelligent management for the unit, which helps in maximizing the power consumption for the whole device. As for the unit initially, it draws 15 watts and that rises to 55 watts under heavy loads. Whereas the included threads allow for great multithreaded performance for all the latest multithreaded computing applications.
NVIDIA MX550 GPU
Handling the video editing, rendering, and gaming faster than its previous Kettering is the Nvidia MX550 Discrete graphics card which is clocked at a frequency of 1065 MHz, with 2 GB of GDDR6 graphical memory.
Memory and Storage
In conjunction with the CPU is the onboard soldered memory which is clocked at 3200 MHz and provides a capacity of 8 GB. This allows the Lenovo laptop to intelligently multitask in between different windows, or tabs. In order to provide dual channel configuration, it is provided with another empty DDR4 slot which allows the user to provide it with a maximum of 32 GB. The storage setup is supported by the Opal PCIe Gen 4.0x4 NVMe M.2 2242 Solid State Drive, with a capacity of 512 GB, with an option of adding another PCIe 3 M.2 SSD for a large, capable, fast, and reliable storage.
Display
The display included is powered by a 14-inch IPS panel, which ensures it has faster response times than a TN panel. This one, in particular, is capable of displaying at a colorful resolution of Full HD 1920 x 1080, while also brightening itself up to 300 nits, to make its user tackle difficult lighting conditions. The Anti-glare surfacing allows it to reject reflections and the 45% coverage of the NTSC space makes it a no-brainer for content consumption, and office work.
Battery
The standalone source is the integrated Lithium-Ion Polymer battery which packs a capacity of 57 Wh and can be charged using the 65-Watt USB Type-C AC adapter.
Keyboard and Trackpad
It comes with a ThinkPad-exclusive tactile Non-backlit, English (UK) keyboard, and for the case of Trackpad we have a TrackPoint pointing device and Mylar surface fully clickable and multi-touch capable touchpad,
Other Specs
The ports provided to cope with external connections are 1x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Always On), 1x Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 with a signaling rate of 40 Gbps at the same time it also supports data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0, and DisplayPort 1.4), 1x HDMI 2.1 for display out, up to 4K/60Hz, and an SD Card Slot. While the wireless connections are made possible by the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201, 802.11ax 2x2 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 5.1, and wireless M.2 Card.
The Touch Style, integrated into the Power Button fingerprint reader provides a secure biometric login experience. The camera records at a resolution of 720p and also provides a mechanical privacy shutter. While the audio setup is driven by two Harmon-tuned stereo speakers which are also supported by Dolby Audio.
